There are several Christian traditions that look closely at our desires, and they don’t necessarily talk about it as a bad thing, either. The key is recognizing that we have desire, and then being able to identify its root. Is it from God or from our fallen nature?

A shame-based mindset can really hamper our self-esteem in a discordant way with our identity as children of God. This can diminish our outlook, productivity, effectiveness, and sense of purpose in this world. Conversely, an inflated view of self can do just as much harm. An improper appraisal of our capacity and competency can often lead to injurious, humiliating, and even tragic, results.
